Lest we forget

The flag soared on so gracefully, it had a rhythm to it, like it was swaying to some music that I couldn’t hear. The Kargil War Memorial, overlooking the steep valleys our brave hearts fought for, has a hauntingly beautiful charm to it. The silence speaks of so many stories, of lives that could have been, of promises that would have been fulfilled, of dreams that never saw the light. I could feel immense pain, lingering in those ice cold winds, of every mother who would never again get a chance to spoil her son, every father who regretted not giving his little boy some more time, the sister who would never get to fight with her brother over chocolates, the wife, now a war widow, who would never feel her beloved husband’s warm embrace again, the son who’s super hero wouldn’t play with him ever again and the daughter who wouldn’t be daddy’s little girl anymore. I didn’t know any of them personally, but the loss I was familiar with.

I walked up to what they call ‘Veer Bhoomi’, looking at the tombstones, with little flags fluttering by each of those brave names, without even realizing it, I was crying. I cried for each one of them, I prayed for their souls to rest in eternal peace and I cried some more. I prayed for all those who were left behind and are now broken beyond repair. I prayed for the Martyr Families, who’s lives will never be complete again. I prayed for my own little family and I cried more, I prayed to the Almighty for strength, peace and light.

I lost my father, Major SMK Ghori, in a fierce encounter with Terrorists in Kupwara, J&K. Today would’ve been his 55th birthday, but he departed 15 years ago. I was 8, but I’m blessed with a very vivid memory and I hold on to those few childhood recollections, very dearly. I remember Amma would buy us a small cake, and let us blow the candles, celebrating his birthday even when he’s not around.  So, today I’m going to eat cake, pray for his soul and take pride in being his little girl.

    1. Dear Aunty,

Neither I have seen you nor do I have interacted with you ever, but somehow I wanted to reply to this comment of yours. You are one of those proud ladies. I salute you for your courage and living his (uncle’s) dreams. You seem so driven, so does Sufia. I have an inbuilt respect and love for all army men, women, mothers, fathers, wives, sisters, brothers, daughters, and sons. I am friends with many such people. Sufia is one such girl with extremely amazing will power and strength. She is very respectful and lively too. He must be proud of you, her, and rest of your family. I would love to meet you too.

      Love ❤ Take care.

  2. Sufia, A feel of pain, love, respect and pride when I read this. Touching the heart to the core. Such brave hearts are always so supreme that one must consider themselves lucky to be associated with them. Not all live a life, but those who live after such worthy of life people depart, are braver. My respects to all those people, my respects to u. Shafeeq Mama and all those who lie down beneath the soil, u have risen to the zenith of pride. We no longer need to stare at the stars in the night sky, we can find them brighter, on earth, though hidden from our actual vision. Hats off !! Sufi. Way to go. Keep posting and set an example. Proud of u. Can visualize MAMA smile with tears of sheer joy😪

  8. Great sentiments, Sufia. This nation lives in freedom only because brave and committed men like your father, Maj SMK Ghori , fought and killed the anti nationals. I am sure that from the heaven of eternal peace where your father now lives, he will be smiling down on his own darling daughter. But, he also must be wishing that his “Little Girl” makes her friends and the nation aware that they have to continue his unfinished fight against the anti nationals who still want to destroy India- like the ones at JNU who shouted just that !.

    1. Ruqsar has not only penned a very touching and worthy tribute to her dad but has also highlighted the magnitude of the sacrifice of all our martyrs who never thought twice before putting their lives in danger while upholding the honour of our country and safeguarding its borders. Although sad that he is no more in our midst I feel proud Major Shafeeq was my dear brother and a member of our family. Shabana Nayeem

    1. Dear Sufia, what a lovely piece straight from not only your heart but that of every soldier, including me, who have faced these dangers, taken risks, lost their ‘buddies’ for whom no grief is enough. Beti, we understand your sentiments and salute your fortitude and the strength of your family who are still so steely and resolute in the face of an irreparable loss. God bless you and your family, carry on with the same resolve and prove it to the world that a ‘fauji’ child is a cut above – make your father in his eternal peace proud and all of us ‘faujis’ too. All the best, Jai Hind.

  18. Your feelings are really touching. You have expressed them well but there are hundreds of other children, wives, mothers, fathers brothers and sisters who cannot give them out to remain silent mourners. The nation is indebted to our martyrs but there is a saying ” God and soldier are remembered in times of danger. Danger gone, god forgotten and soldier neglected.” Let us hope that not many of our countrymen prove its correctness.

  19. Dear Sufia,
Read your touching rememberance of your beloved father. Your mother takes the credit to bring up an 8 year old baby girl to this level where you are presently in. Full credit to you too for coming up well befitting your father’s total dedication. Your father would be really happy to see you and your mother doing well in life, from the heavens. I too join you to celebrate his 55th Birthday. I have no hesitation in saying that Almighty has given him pride place in the heavens.

  20. No amount of looking after by the state can compensate for the loss of a family member, and the ungrateful nation that we are , we have totally neglected this segment of society.
We can only pray to the Almighty to grant your family everlasting peace for the tragedy that you had to bear.

  22. “So, today I’m going to eat cake, pray for his soul and take pride in being his little girl.”, speaks it all. That’s the kind of attitude we all need to embrace in our lives. Needless to say, the loss of someone is never replaceable but how we keep that person alive within, is what defines who we are and what we make of ourselves. Letting the situation to carve us or whether to destroy us, is on us. Thanks for making us understand this simple yet immensely deep wisdom through your article.
